Voiceweaving Elements: A playful, interactive workshop that focuses on sounding the inner landscape and collaborating with others in a flow of rhythm, melody and harmony. Beginning with ourselves, we take time to loosen up and free our natural voice by “checking in” and exploring personal sound vocabularies. Then we journey through a sequence of sound games with partners and groups. Step-by-step we practice basic improvisational skills: call and response, echo, rhythm, patterns, riffing and listening. Finally, as a full group we practice pattern weaving by setting and layering musical patterns, varying them, and following the evolving song as it transforms within our circle.
Voiceweaving Practice: Building on skills from Voiceweaving Elements, we go deeper into the practice of accessing and strengthening personal song-lines. We play with partners to develop intuitive listening skills, collaborative melody lines, melodic and harmonic variations and layered harmonies. This empowering work enables us to artfully develop our vocal instrument and attune our minds to discovering and stabilizing unique rhythms, melodies and harmonies as we access deep veins of personal narrative. Working with others we learn to lead and follow, initiate and support and slip into that intuitive sweet spot where the song is upwelling between us, with no leader and no follower.
Pattern Weaving: Although we are all one, in physical terms we are many. But the longing to simultaneously be oneself and part of everything is both profound and quite normal. Pattern Weaving is a pathway into the space that’s between us, where our energies can merge in the realm of transforming sound. Cacophony, harmony, counterpoint, melody, dissonance, unison, simple and complex rhythms are all part of the creation of multi-layered improvisational group songs. And there are many ways to enter in. In this workshop we’ll explore basic techniques for building improvised, wordless songs from the beat (or pulse) up.
Catching a Song: Building on the work of Pattern Weaving we “set the course” of our songs by adding experimental structure, topical focus and pre-composed elements. This is a small-group studio experience that focuses on the development of chant songs with the possibility of scoring them for public sharing.
Voiceweaving Lab Jams: Jams engage seasoned singers in a group practice specific to the individuals involved – for experienced improvisers.
